The Barbary Coast

California food and history is rooted in the coastal ranching culture of the Spanish and Mexican frontier. Italian, French, German, Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and American immigrants filled the streets of San Francisco. Along the wharf, a traveler could hear, taste and smell the corners of the globe. With license to innovate, the world rushed to California. The Barbary Coast was where resources, lawlessness, creativity, and multiethnic foods converged. Its history, place, and meaning best explain the essence of my food and the experience I hope to create.
